First in Ellen Rowley – (AAI Board member and TCD lecturer)
Ellen had three thoughts surrounding the concept of ‘No Man’s Land’ and therefore decided to create a triptych referring to three distinct places and emotions that evoke ‘no man’s land’. Prospective – Real – Imagined, Ellen’s work refers to her experience as a cyclist on the manic roads of Dublin, her PhD research into architecture in Dublin, sensing loss and empathising with homelessness. It seems inconceivable to be able to touch on this diverse a range of topics but Ellen very skillfully does through beautifully simple strong lines and washes of colour. We were delighted to facilitate this wonderful artistic exploration with Ellen, many thanks.
Following on the architecture theme we had Samatha Martin McAuliffe of the Architecture Department in with three of her students – Eoin Murphy, Aine Nic an Riogh and Amelie.
They had recently explored the concept of Utopian in all it’s guises through their studies and two immediate spaces came to mind – the Berlin Wall with the two spaces in between and desert – nature’s way of keeping man away! They worked on pieces individually but with a common concept in mind. The result was muliple prints arranges as a group. The monoprinted line giving over all cohension to their collaborative piece inside a collarborative piece!! Many thanks to Eoin, Amelie, Aine and Samantha for contributing so freely of their time and talent.
